National Laboratories Issue

Our national laboratories are a national asset, the crown jewels of technology innovation; and commercializing the technologies within these laboratories advances our nation's ability to compete in the technology business world.

Domenici tirelessly supports the work of New Mexico's two national labs: Sandia and Los Alamos. To support their efforts, in the FY03 appropriations package he secured more than $145.9 million in additional funds for projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory and $61.5 million for Sandia National Laboratories.

Along with the outstanding science, weapons research and stewardship over the nation's existing nuclear weapons stockpile that form the bulk of the labs' mission, Domenici is a strong proponent of technology transfer to the private sector. His 1989 technology transfer legislation, the National Competitiveness Technology Transfer Act of 1989 (Public Law 101-189), enabled the labs to form partnerships with private, U.S. industry, helping the labs and New Mexico capitalize on high-tech opportunities and create new jobs. Some of the results can be seen in the Sandia Tech-park in Albuquerque. Domenici has and will continue to work to ensure that New Mexico's national labs remain on the forefront of the technological frontier.
