Indian Affairs Committee
Senator Domenici is a long time member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.
The Indian Affairs Committee has jurisdiction to study the unique problems of American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native peoples and to propose legislation to alleviate these difficulties. These issues include, but are not limited to, Indian education, economic development, land management, trust responsibilities, health care, and claims against the United States. Additionally, all legislation proposed by Members of the Senate that specifically pertains to American Indians, Native Hawaiians, or Alaska Natives is under the jurisdiction of the Committee. There are currently 15 members on the Committee.
Senator Domenici's Accomplishments and Legislation with the Indian Affairs Committee in the 108th Congress include:
S.281—Senator Domenici co-sponsored The Native American Commercial Driving Training and Technical Assistance Act Indian Tribal Surface Transportation Act of 2003. This bill eases tribal access to technical assistance funds and authorizes the Secretary to provide competitive grants to tribal colleges or universities to support programs providing training and certificates leading to the licensing of Native Americans with respect to commercial vehicle driving.
S.285—Senator Domenici co-sponsored this bill that authorizes the demonstration programs allowing the integration and consolidation of alcohol and substance abuse programs and services provided by Indian tribal governments in the hopes of providing better and more efficient care.
S.522—Senator Domenici co-sponsored this bill that amends the Energy Policy Act of 1992 to assist Indian tribes in developing energy resources.
S.1165—Senator Domenici sponsored this update of the Indian Reservation Roads Program. The Committee hopes to pass a version of this bill soon.
S.1377—Senator Domenici co-sponsored this bill authorizing a Native American language demonstration program at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, in consortium with the Linguistic Institute for Native Americans.
